Choose one cutoff#
You need “View reports and insights” and access to financial reports.
Compare debits and credits#
- 1Open Reports and select Trial Balance.
- 2Use Filter by date and All Currencies, then click Search.
- 3Compare account balances and the debit and credit totals.
- 4Open any unexpected balance in General Ledger and follow the source document.
- 5Compare control accounts with their receivable, payable, inventory, or bank reconciliations at that same cutoff.
Look for unusually large balances, dormant accounts with new activity, and control accounts that do not match their detailed records.
Inspect unusual accounts#
A balanced trial balance means debits equal credits; it does not prove account classification, cutoff or source transactions are correct.
WARNING: Do not close a period solely because totals balance. Reconcile control accounts and outstanding source documents.
Before sign-off#
A balanced total is only the starting check; inspect control accounts and reconcile them before locking the period.
Investigate the underlying documents before entering a manual journal.
