Product Categories

Structuring catalog items into hierarchical parent-child category trees, category code rules, and departmental sales/inventory analytics.

Reviewed on 2026-10-07

Plan the category tree#

The “Create and manage product categories” permission is required to maintain catalog categories. Decide the parent/child grouping before assigning products.

Add a category and parent#

  1. 1
Open Categories and create a category.
  2. 2
Enter its name and, if needed, select its parent.
  3. 3
Save it, then assign products through their Category field.
  4. 4
Open an imported or newly created product and confirm it appears in the intended category.
  5. 5
Review similar category names before adding another one.

A category choice affects searching and grouped reporting; it does not change physical stock.

Check where products appear#

Categories organize products and can be used to filter reports that offer a Category filter. Creating a category does not create a tax rule or a separate Sales by Category report.

WARNING: Changing a category can change future filtering and navigation; check products that rely on it.

If the category cannot be saved#

Check the category name and parent choice; a category cannot be its own parent.
